Connect an external data catalog when your tables are already managed by another service and you want to query them with WherobotsDB. The external service remains responsible for the catalog metadata; Wherobots registers the connection as a foreign catalog. This workflow is also called data federation. You can browse connected catalogs in Data Catalogs and query their tables in place without first copying them into a Wherobots-managed catalog. Writes depend on the integration, table format, and permissions configured at the source. Each guide describes its supported operations and spatial type limitations.

Add a foreign catalog

Choose your catalog service. Each setup guide includes the required permissions and authentication steps. AWS Glue and Amazon S3 Tables use a Wherobots Cloud Connection. Databricks Unity Catalog authenticates directly against your Databricks workspace URL: use a Personal Access Token (PAT) for Delta tables or OAuth client credentials for Iceberg tables.
To store tables in your own general purpose S3 bucket with Wherobots managing the catalog metadata, create a managed catalog through an S3 storage integration. This is separate from connecting an Amazon S3 Tables catalog.
