EU Region Support 🆕

Wherobots is excited to announce our first compute region outside the United States, with workload capabilities now available in AWS eu-west-1 (Ireland).

This key expansion of our multi-region support brings Wherobots compute power – for Notebooks, Job Runs, and SQL sessions – directly into the European landscape.

This new region provides you with the flexibility to run workloads closer to your European Organization members and data sources, helps meet data residency requirements (like GDPR), potentially improving performance through lower latency.

EU Region Support is limited to Paid Organizations

Only Professional and Enterprise Edition Organizations can use aws-eu-west-1.

Community Edition Organizations are limited to AWS us-west-2.

For more information on Paid Organizations, see Wherobots Pricing.

If you have already decided on using a Paid Organization, see Create a new Organization or Upgrade Organization.

Benefits

Leveraging Wherobots' new support for the AWS eu-west-1 (Ireland) region provides significant benefits for your Organization, including:

  • Compliance: Allowing members in your Organization to run notebook compute resources within the European Union (EU) using the eu-west-1 region in Amazon Web Services (AWS). This can aid in meeting data sovereignty requirements such as GDPR, provided an EU region is selected.

    Telemetry Data Export

Telemetry data, including logs, is leaving the region even if notebook, job run, or SQL session is run in an EU region. While your core data processing happens in the selected EU region, the Wherobots' operational metadata, performance telemetry, and system logs generated during those operations are exported from the EU region. For more information see Data Residency Guidelines.

  • Latency Reduction: Potentially increasing performance of your queries and analytics for data sources located in Europe when the appropriate EU compute region is chosen for your workloads.

  • Workflow Efficiency: Setting a default EU region saves time by pre-configuring the compute location for new Wherobots notebooks.

Key Features

  • Notebooks: You can start a notebook in the EU region with the new AWS eu-west-1 in Wherobots Cloud.
  • Job Run: The Job Run API has a new region parameter with the following valid values: aws-eu-west-1, aws-us-west-2.
  • SQL Session: The Spatial SQL API has a new region parameter with the following valid values: aws-eu-west-1, aws-us-west-2.
  • Default Region Preference: A new option under Preferences allows Admins to select a default compute region (AWS us-west-2 or AWS eu-west-1) for notebooks. The selected default region is automatically applied to notebooks created after the preference is set.
  • Wherobots File System: The Wherobots File System provides storage located within your selected deployment region. This differs from Managed Storage, which remains located in AWS US West-2. For more information, see Data Residency Guidelines.

Important Considerations

  • Region Availability: The specific EU regions available for selection (e.g., AWS eu-west-1) will depend on Wherobots' current deployment and will be visible in the dropdown list.
  • Data Locality: Choosing an EU compute region is most effective when your data also resides within or near the EU to minimize data transfer latency and potential egress costs. This setting controls compute location, not data storage location.
    • Storage Integration: For an optimal experience in Storage Integrations, customers should co-locate their AWS S3 data storage bucket with their Wherobots compute region for optimal performance and cost savings.
  • Default Region Setting only applies to Notebooks:
    • Default Region setting in Preferences does not affect Job Runs and SQL Sessions.
    • Default Region setting in Preferences only affects notebooks created after the preference is saved; it does not change the region of existing notebooks.
  • Global Catalog View: You will always see the same complete list of your catalogs, databases (namespaces), and tables, no matter which compute region you are using.

Data Residency Guidelines

  • Managed Storage Data Residency: Wherobots Cloud's out-of-the-box S3-based Managed Storage remains in AWS us-west-2.
    • Wherobots File System Data Residency: However, storage within the Wherobots File System is deployed locally within your selected region (e.g., aws-eu-west-1 if your runtime is deployed there).
  • Telemetry Data Residency: Wherobots transfers telemetry data including system logs, performance metrics, customer usage data, and diagnostic information generated by the Wherobots platform, outside the geographical boundaries of the selected compute region (e.g., outside the EU).
    • However, all the data processing driven directly by customers' queries and code executes solely inside the designated EU region. This data transfer applies specifically to the Wherobots platform's own operational telemetry and logs, not the execution or data content of your specific workloads.
  • OPEN & PRO Spatial Catalog Data Residency: Open (wherobots_open_data) and Pro (wherobots_pro_data) Spatial Catalogs remain located in the AWS us-west-2 region.
    • OPEN & PRO Spatial Catalog Performance: For the best query performance when using the Wherobots OPEN and PRO datasets, run your compute (Notebooks, Jobs, SQL) in the us-west-2 region, as these specific datasets are hosted there. Accessing them from other regions might be slower.
