# GeoDataFrame.overlay

> Perform a distributed spatial overlay with another GeoDataFrame.

Perform a distributed spatial overlay with another GeoDataFrame.

## Signature

```python theme={"system"}
overlay(right, how='intersection', keep_geom_type=None, make_valid=True)
```

## Parameters

<ParamField path="right" type="GeoDataFrame" required>
  The GeoDataFrame overlaid with this frame.
</ParamField>

<ParamField path="how" type="('intersection', 'union', 'identity', 'symmetric_difference', 'difference')" default="'intersection'">
  Overlay operation to perform.
</ParamField>

<ParamField path="keep_geom_type" type="bool" default="None">
  Keep only geometries in the family of this frame. `None` filters
  like `True` without eagerly evaluating the result to emit
  GeoPandas' conditional dropped-geometry warning.
</ParamField>

<ParamField path="make_valid" type="bool" default="True">
  Repair invalid polygon inputs before overlay.
</ParamField>

## Returns

<ResponseField name="return" type="GeoDataFrame">
  Distributed overlay result. Constructing it eagerly runs one
  distributed validation and metadata aggregation over both inputs;
  overlay geometry rows remain lazily evaluated.
</ResponseField>
